Sometimes, you might want to have a poll open when the class starts, perhaps to gauge the level of understanding of a concept covered previously or in homework. Or you have a concept that you want to work with as part of the lesson plan. The poll items may be a bit more complicated than you might create in real-time within the meeting. This time, we’re going to show how instructors can create a poll before the class meeting.
Instructors may want to poll their students in order to generate or facilitate an activity or discussion in class. For example:
How do you primarily use the language outside of class?
- Doing homework
- Watching videos in the language
- Interacting on social media
- Talking with co-workers or customers
- Listening to music
- Other
Instructors can view the results come in as the poll is conducted. Then, they have the option of sharing the results with the class. (More on sharing results in an upcoming Tip of the Day).
Follow the instructions below to create a poll before the class meets.
1. Log in to your account at zoom.umn.edu
2. Under the Meetings tab, click the meeting in which you would like to include a poll.
3. Scroll to the bottom of the meeting information page. Click the Add button in the box with the “You have not created any poll yet” notice.
4. Fill out the information in the Add a Poll window:
5. Click the Save button. You will now be able to access this poll at any time you host this meeting.
6. To launch the poll while hosting a meeting, click the Polls/Polling icon on the toolbar.
7. Click the Launch Polling / Launch Poll button at the bottom of the Polls window.
8. You can watch the poll results as they come in:
9. Click End Poll / End Polling to close the poll.
There will be more information on polling in Zoom in upcoming Tips of the Day. Topics will include adding questions to a poll, relaunching a poll, and navigating multiple polls in a meeting.
Hi Dan. Is there a way to find how each individual student did on the poll after class so that we can keep track for assessment purposes?
ReplyDeleteYes, you can track students' participation and their responses to the poll questions. You have to make sure the "Anonymous" checkbox is not selected when designing the poll. Then you can generate a report of the poll in the "Reports" section of the web interface. Watch for an upcoming Tip on how to do this.
