Several Ways to Take Screenshots on a PC

In this current time of remote learning and instruction, screenshots can be a good way of incorporating visual materials into your online classes. There are several different ways of capturing what is on your computer screen using a PC in Windows. You can take a screenshot of  the whole screen, an open window, or select only a portion of the screen. Here are a few ways to take a screenshot, each with different functionality:

  • To capture the entire screen, press the print screen key (Prt Sc). (On some PCs, the function key needs to be pressed to trigger the print screen key). The image of the screen is copied to the clipboard.
  • To save the entire screen as an image file, press the Windows Key + Prt Sc. The file will be saved in the Pictures folder in the Screenshots folder.

  • To copy only the active window, press Alt + Prt Sc. The image will be copied to the clipboard.

  • To click and drag a rectangle to capture only part of the screen or window, press Windows Key + Shift + S. The selected snip will be copied to the clipboard. Caveat: this method only works for Windows 10.

Screenshots on the clipboard can then be pasted into other programs (photo editors, documents, etc.). Saved image files can similarly be used in any number of applications.
