Temporarily unmute your microphone in Zoom

Today we show you how to unmute your microphone quickly and temporarily in Zoom. The following is our recommended procedure.

  1. Begin with your microphone muted
  2. Hold down the SPACE bar. Your microphone is now live and you can be heard
  3. Let go of the SPACE bar. Your microphone is now muted.

This procedure is the default behavior for our installation of zoom. If this procedure does not work, it is most likely turned off. You can turn it on again in your audio settings:

1. Within the zoom meeting, click the carat or upward arrow next to the microphone icon at the bottom left of the screen:

Using the carat button to show the audio settings

2.  Select “Audio Settings” at the bottom of the pop-up menu. The settings window will appear.

3.  At the bottom of the settings window, click the checkbox for the last item in the window. This will turn on the setting to let you press and hold SPACE to temporarily unmute yourself.

You should be good to go. Share this tip with your students. It makes it much easier to keep the conversation flowing.
